AMATUER ASTRONOMY CLUB
Star-studded night sky allured the man from the dawn
of civilization. He gazed at it with awe and wonder and strived to find his
place in the midst of celestial bodies. He closely observed the movement of the
planets and stars and thereby developed the calendar system. The science of
Astronomy also emerged as a result of this intense study of the
sky.
To inculcate the spirit of astronomy among the young
minds in particular and public in general, the Regional Science centre
& Planetarium, Calicut is starting an amateur astronomy club
at its centre. The activities of the club are tabulated
below:
|
1 |
General Observation |
Recognising the constellations, stars and other
objects in sky. |
|
2 |
Special
Observation |
Observing Occultation of asteroids, timing of
Solar or Lunar eclipses etc, mapping Moon, occultation of natural
satellites by parent planet. |
|
3 |
Variable star
observation |
Regularly noting the brightness of some
particular stars and forwarding the records to central monitoring
body. |
|
4 |
Comet
Hunting |
Search for new intruder with
binoculars |
|
5 |
Satellite
observation |
Observation of the artificial satellite with
their regular movement in the sky and drawing their
path. |
|

Demonstrating to public the astronomical
phenomenons with charts, pictures, slides, models
etc. |
|

Generating science
movement |
Making people aware of the science behind the
observed phenomenon by street drama, poems, song
etc |
An amount of Rs. 100/- will be charged as annual
membership fee. The members will also be intimated about the special science
programmes organised regularly by the centre. As and when the centre makes any
publications like newsletter or astronomical bulletin, all members will get a
free copy of the same. They will also have free entry to science centre
only.
